Wright - Russell E. Fischer, 89, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, May 21, 2021. Russell was born to Otto A. and Minnie E. (Flair) Fischer October 14, 1931 at Trinity Hospital, Dodge City, Kansas.
Russell was a lifetime resident of Ford County. As a child, he attended Pleasant View country school near his home graduating from Dodge City Senior High in 1950. After graduation Russell enlisted in the United States Army. He served at Fort Ord, California and Fort Lewis, Washington.
After honorable discharge from the Army, Russell returned to the family farm near Wright where he farmed with his father and brother Millard. He continued his education at Dodge City Junior College. During this time he met a pretty red headed girl, Cleo Taylor who was a teller at the First National Bank. They were united in marriage on November 8, 1959 at the First Christian Church in Dodge City. Russell and Cleo raised two sons on the farm north of Wright. Russell was active as a farmer and stockman until his death. He took great joy in attending his grandchildren's activities, rarely missing an event.
Russell was an active member of the First Christian Church of Dodge City, where he served as an Elder and a Deacon. He was also a Member of the Kansas Wheat Growers Association, Ford County Taxpayers Association, and a Lifetime Member of the NRA. Russell also served on a number of boards in the community during his lifetime including the Wright Coop, Ford County 4-H, and Grandview Township.
Russell is survived by his wife Cleo of the home, two sons Mark D. Fischer and wife Sherrie of Dodge City and Dr. Scott D. Fischer and wife Jeanie of Wright; a sister, Peg Nelson of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Jeff Winter and wife Layna, Jamie Lockhart and husband Curtis, Janell Urban and husband Timothy, Dr. Ashley Fischer, Taylor, Christian, Caleb, Chloe and fiancé, Eli Thompson, Scott, Lauren, David and Daniel Fischer; eight great-grandchildren, Austin, Paige, Emily, and Harley Winter, Molly and Kendall Lockhart, Cole and Carson Urban; and a number of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister Jean Kirkpatrick; a brother, Millard Fischer; and a nephew, Michael Fischer.
Funeral service will be held at First Christian Church, Dodge City on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 11:00 AM with Pastors Bob Taylor and Dusty Cookson presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from noon to 8:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00PM. Memorials are suggested to the Russell Fischer Missions Fund-First Christian Church or donor's choice in care of the funeral home.
