Obituary

Sarah Anne Pennington, a woman whose life was defined by the warmth of her heart, her selfless nature, and her artistic abilities, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026.

Born at the San Diego Naval Hospital on May 11, 1944, to Amy L. and Ernest C. Sturgeon Jr. Sarah’s arrival was marked by the history of the era; her father, Ernest C. Sturgeon, Jr., was serving in the Navy during WWII. After the war, the family returned to Dodge City, Kansas. Sarah attended Lincoln Elementary, Dodge City Jr. and Sr. High Schools, and Dodge City Community College, forming bonds that would last a lifetime.

In 1963, Sarah married the love of her life, Ronald "Ronnie" Pennington. Their 62-year marriage was a partnership of devotion and happiness. To Ronnie, she was always his “Little Sarah,” and together they raised two daughters, Amy and Erin.

Sarah spent her early career in Kansas where she worked in special education before becoming the Business Manager for her parents' company, M&S Wholesale. In 1995, seeking to be closer to her daughters, Sarah and Ron moved to Arizona. This move started "second life" in the Sun Lakes community. Sarah became a beloved fixture at the Arizona Diamondbacks ticketing office, where she was twice honored as "MVP" for her excellence and honored on the field. She was a familiar, happy sight arriving at work in her signature red "Bug." Her creativity even extended to her love for the game, often making unique baseball-themed crafts for her family.

Perhaps her greatest gift was her ability to bring people together. In the early 2000s, she founded the "Dodge City Dream Girls," organizing an annual Arizona reunion for 10-15 of her childhood friends. These women, though scattered by time and distance, have remained close friends because of Sarah.

Sarah was also a gifted seamstress and quilter. She lovingly sewed clothes for her daughters and later created beautiful quilts and Christmas stockings for every family member, friend, and even the family dogs. Sarah was loved by everyone she met. She lived a life of selflessness, always putting others before herself.

She is survived by her husband, Ronnie (Phoenix AZ); her two daughters, Amy Corman and husband David (Phoenix, AZ) and Erin Fischer and husband Bob (Cincinnati, OH); her brother, Lee Sturgeon and wife Kathy (Phoenix, AZ); her sister, Marilyn Burke and husband Jim (Wright, KS); three grandchildren, RJ, Genna, and Ben; and five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Lilly, Nolan, Lyla, and Warren. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, Amy Sturgeon and Ernest C. Sturgeon, Jr.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Dodge City, Kansas, in the Spring of 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Compassion International. Checks can be made out to Compassion International, please include "Sarah Pennington Memorial" in the memo line, and may be sent in care of Swaim Funeral Home, 1901 6th Ave, Dodge City, KS 67801.
