Born on February 11, 1938, in Cherokee, Oklahoma, Shirley dedicated her life to education and the arts, inspiring countless students during her long tenure as a ninth-grade English, creative writing, and drama teacher in the Dodge City School District.
Shirley's impact extended far beyond the classroom. An accomplished writer, she published numerous articles in various magazines and crafted engaging plays and monologues for teenage students. Her works were performed by aspiring young actors across the country, showcasing her talent and passion for nurturing creativity. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to education, Shirley was inducted into the Kansas Teacher's Hall of Fame in 2000. Friends, family, and colleagues will fondly remember her not just as an educator, but as a beacon of encouragement and joy. She leaves behind her loving spouse Douglas Ullom, sons Kelly and Kenton Ullom, and a legacy reflected in the lives of those she touched through her teaching and writing.
Shirley's spirit will live on through the many students she inspired and the stories she lovingly crafted. As we remember her life and celebrate her remarkable journey, we will gather in the future to honor her memory and the indelible mark she made on all of us.
