Cimarron – Stephan "Steve" Galliart, 78, died October 12, 2025 at St. Catherine's of Dodge City. He was born on November 7, 1946 in Great Bend, the son of Eddie and Jean Doris (Stephan) Galliart.
Stephan's childhood was spent in Pratt, where he graduated from Pratt High School in 1964 and then from Pratt Community College. He went on to complete his education at Emporia State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education. On May 27, 1967, Stephan was united in marriage to the love of his life, Virginia Ellis. They shared 58 year of marriage together. Stephan proudly served in the United States Army Reserve during the Vietnam War.
Stephan began teaching at Silver Lake High School, where he taught history, government, and driver's education. The family moved to to Cunningham to take over the family custom harvesting business. In 1979, they moved to Dodge City followed by a final move to Cimarron in 1983. Stephan was the office manager for Dewey Trucking and later went to work at Garden City Peterbilt Trucking in Dodge City before retiring in February of 2017. After retirement, he helped LeRoy Davidson part-time during harvest, driving truck. Stephan enjoyed golf, gardening, and yard work. He was an avid Kansas State football and KU basketball fan. He was a loving husband, father, and papa.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Jennie" of Cimarron; two children, Tammy Schartz and husband Mike of Dodge City and Todd Galliart and wife Joy Marie of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Tanner, Nate, and Preston Schartz, McKayla and Alyssa Galliart; and one sister, Jeannie Laging and husband Ed of Conway, Arkansas; and many nieces and nephews. Stephan is preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Jean Galliart; parents-in-law, Samuel and Irene Ellis; brother and sister-in-law, Norman "Shorty" and Dorothy Ellis; sister-in-law, Shirley Ellis; and nephews, Richard and Curtis Ellis.
Funeral service will be held at Cimarron First Christian Church on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 10:30 AM with pastors Kyle Lawson and David Johnson presiding. Burial will follow at Cimarron Cemetery with military honors by KSARNG Funeral Honors and Southwest Kansas Veterans Funeral Honor Guard. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron on Friday, October 17, 2025 from 2:00 – 8:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 4-6 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Cimarron Christian Church or the Gray County Over 50 in care of the funeral home.
