Obituary

Fort Dodge - Steven Craig Zimmerman, 72, died March 8, 2021 in Fort Dodge.  He was born on May 1,1948 in Spearville, the son of Edward and Dolly (Craighead) Zimmerman.

Steven grew up in Dodge City before moving to Fowler where he graduated from Fowler High School in 1966. After high school, Steven enlisted in the United States Air Force; serving for four years. During this time, he was stationed at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona, Thailand, and Tinker Air Force base in Oklahoma. He served as a crew chief on the T38A trainer, F-4D and F-105D Jet Fighters. After his time in the Air Force, Steven began working as a farm hand. He later worked many years in law enforcement throughout several communities in Southwest Kansas. Steven also worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation. In 1972, Steven married Cheryl Dewell; together they had two children, Eric and Jennifer. He later married Janet Belt on May 1, 1987.

Steven enjoyed fishing, especially with his son Eric as well as his grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping, gardening, farming, working cattle and watching his grandchildren's activities. He was also an animal lover. Steven was very involved in the Fort Dodge Community; helping at the food pantry and clothing pantry, working at the museum, and serving as the President of the Residents Cottage Council.

He was a member of the VFW of Dodge City, as well as St. Andrew's Catholic Church of Wright.

Steven is survived by his wife, Janet Zimmerman of Fort Dodge; daughter, Jennifer Lindsay and husband Kraig of Bucklin; step daughter, Jena Johns and husband Steve of Hays; grandchildren, Jaron Lindsay and Karter Lindsay; step grandchildren, Chad Lane, Alicia Davis, Michelle Lane, and Brock Lane; several great grandchildren; brother, Kerry Zimmerman and wife Linda of Dodge City; sister, Bonnie Golliher of Wichita; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dolly; son, Eric Zimmerman; and sister, Connie Zimmerman.

Funeral mass will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Wright on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 1:00 PM with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding.  Burial will follow at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery in Fort Dodge with Military Honors by McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard and the American Legion District 8 Honor Guard.  Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Dodge City on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM with a vigil to follow at 7:00 PM at the church.  In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Fort Dodge Activity Fund or Hospice of the Prairie in care of the funeral home.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
