Dodge City - Sylvia Casandra Owens, 79, died July 7, 2022 in Dodge City, Kansas. She was born on September 6, 1942 in Stirrat, West Virginia, the daughter of Cephas and Pauline (Madison) Rudolph.

Sylvia worked as a home health nurse most of her working life. She was a single mom raising four children and at times working three jobs to make ends meet. She was a fighter and tried to always give people a reason to smile and keep going through their own hard times. She was creative and was always encouraging her children to be their best and to believe in themselves. No one was prouder of their children and grandchildren. Sylvia loved church, cooking, helping people, and spending time with family.

She was the first lady and member of the Hanna Memorial Church of God in Christ of Dodge City. Sylvia served as  an assistant district missionary and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

She is survived by her loving husband, Levert Owens, Jr; children, Joycelyn Wilson, Aaron Johnson, and Leslie Johnson, Jr.; three sisters; 10 grandchildren, Justin C. Geurin, Jacob C. Johnson, Javonte D. Sherrill, Aaron C. Johnson, II, Alicia Lucas, Quinnell Wilder, Elias Johnson, Jaclene Clinkenbeard, Ebonie Davidson, and David Williams; 15 great grandchildren; and many extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; her eldest daughter, Felicia Johnson; and five brothers.

Funeral service will be held at Bible Way Church of God in Christ in Liberal, Kansas on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 1:00 PM with Supt. Lawrence Johnson and Pastor Steve Bailem presiding.  No burial will follow as cremation will take place following the visitation.  Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday, July 22, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 8:00PM.  Memorials are suggested to the Sylvia Owens Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
