Obituary

SATANTA - Thelma Alberta Gass-Hughes, 93, died November 4, 2014 at Garden Valley Retirement Village, Garden City. She was born on December 12, 1920 in Satanta, the daughter of James A. and Stella (Coder) Hill.

Thelma lived most of her life in the Satanta and Garden City communities. She worked for a short time as a telephone operator. Thelma devoted much of her life to caring for others. She opened her home and heart to over 56 children in need of foster care. Thelma married Meldie Baker. He preceded her in death. She then married Albert Gass. He also preceded her in death. Later, Thelma married Robert Hughes. He preceded her in death on August 27, 2012.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Satanta.

Thelma is survived by one son, James Baker and wife Joyce of Garden City; one daughter, LaDonna Fowler of Atchison; one step-son, Jim Gass and wife Joan of Oklahoma; one foster daughter, Rose Reid of Pittsburg; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Ramona Berning; one sister and brother-in-law, Viola and Ernest Crane; and three husbands, Meldie Baker, Albert Gass, and Robert Hughes.

Funeral service will be held at Satanta United Methodist Church on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Kelvin Heitmann presiding. Burial will follow at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Sunday, November 9, 2014 from noon to 6:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Satanta United Methodist Church or Deerfield United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
