Velva O. Thomas

DODGE CITY - Velva O. Thomas, 90, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Western Plains Medical Complex at Dodge City. She was born on August 30, 1920 at Baxter, Iowa the daughter of Dwight B. and Dulcia (Stewart) Cross. She attended Elm Grove County School and graduated from Mingo High School in Mingo, Iowa. In 1942 she married Frank Shuey in Iowa. She later married Fred Thomas in 1963 in Unionville, Missouri. He preceded her in death in 1965. Velva moved to Dodge City in June of 1985.

She was a member of First Assembly Of God in Dodge City and was a former member of Central Assembly Of God and Trinity Open Bible Church both of Des Moines, Iowa. She was also a member of U.A.W., R.S.V.P. and A.A.R.P..

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Mae Knop of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a son, Lowell Eugene Shuey of Grimes, Iowa; and other daughters, Kathy Damron of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Lois Slater of Fountain, Florida; Lola Little of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; Linda Faye of Des Moines, Iowa; and Loretta Johnson of Dodge City.
She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a son Larry LeRoy Sams.

Funeral service will be held at First Assembly of God in Dodge City on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 10:00 AM with Rev. David Graves presiding. Burial will follow at Laural Hills Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Thursday, December 9, 2010 from Noon to 8:00 PM.
