SUBLETTE - Vernon "Red" McBride, 83, died July 3, 2014 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. He was born on March 10, 1931 in Rolla, the son of Bennett and Mary (Riley) McBride.
Vernon was a Korean War Veteran, who proudly served in country as a radar man 1st class in the United States Navy. After retiring from the military, he worked in many fields including as a jeweler and in woodworking. He ultimately retired from Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company in Ulysses in 1991. Vernon married the love of his life, Jackie Farrar on January 1, 1978 in Hugoton. They made their home in Ulysses and later moved to Sublette to be closer to their grandchildren. Veronon was as avid reader, enjoyed wood working and hunting as well as crossword puzzles and westerns. His true enjoyment was his family and spending time with his grandkids.
Vernon is survived by his beloved wife, Jackie McBride of the home; two daughters, Kelli Jo Goree and Meghan Urwin both of Sublette; one brother, Earl McBride of Panama City, Florida; and four grandchildren, Michael, Jordan, and Leslee all of Sublette and Jollie of Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maxine Hunt; and one grandson, Daniel.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Satanta on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Jim Dieker presiding. Burial will follow at Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Monday, July 7, 2014 from Noon to 8:00 P.M.. Memorials are suggested to Kansas Soldier's Home-Activity Fund in care of the funeral home.
