Vernon attended the Standard District #73 country school east of Fairview, Oklahoma.
He first owned a custom harvesting crew for over 20 years.
Vernon then began his own trucking business which he operated for over 25 years, until
his retirement on December 28, 2007.
On May 29, 1949, Vernon married Elda Nightengale in Scott City.
She preceded him in death in July of 1998.
Vernon later married
Ruth
Minninger on
October 22, 2000.
She survives.
He
was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite-Southern Star Congregation of Geiger, Alabama.
Those left to cherish Vernon's memory are his wife, Ruth Nichols of Montezuma; six children, Rachel Unruh and husband Larry of Copeland, Ron Nichols and wife Camilla of Aliceville, Alabama, Alan Nichols and wife LeAnne of Gainesville, Alabama, Clark Nichols and wife Judy of Hardin, Montana, DeAnn Koehn and husband Steve of Mt Crawford, Virginia, and Bob Nichols and wife Jana of Emelle, Alabama; four sisters, Ruth Johnson of Linden, Alberta, Canada, Naomi Wenger and husband Bill of Newton, Bonita Haynes and husband John of Middleton, Michigan, June Jantz and husband Harold of Neodesha; three brothers, Harold Nichols and wife Shirley of Marysville, Arkansas, Galen Nichols and wife Bernice of Isabella, Oklahoma, and Jack Nichols of Maysville, Arkansas; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Elda Nichols; his parents; and one brother, Dale Nichols.
Funeral service will be held at Church of God in Christ Mennonite-Southern Star Congregation in Geiger, Alabama on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 10:30 A.M . Burial will follow at Soul's Chapel Cemetery in Geiger . Visitation will be at Bethel Home in Montezuma on Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
