Obituary

DODGE CITY - Vernon Rex Zollars, 90, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City. He was born on March 17, 1920 at Abbyville the son of Daniel L. and Alma (Knoche) Zollars.

Vernon received his Bachelors degree from Emporia State Teachers College and his masters from the University of Colorado. He served in the US Marines during WWII serving the Pacific Theater. Mr. Zollars moved to Dodge City in 1945 where he taught in the music departments at Dodge City High School and Dodge City Community College. He later became the head of the fine arts department and helped design the DCCC little theater.

Vernon was a member of the First Christian Church where he served as the music director for 35 years, Elder, Deacon, Trustee and sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Dodge City Lions Club, V.F.W. and American Legion Posts in Dodge City, and all Masonic organizations.

Survivors include a sister-in -law, Wilda Zollars of Overland Park and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Marshall, Eldon and Dan; and one sister, Awilda McEachern.

Funeral service will be held at the First Christian Church on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:30 AM with Mr. Phil Scott presiding. Burial will be at 2:30 PM on Monday at Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Sunday, November 14, 2010 from Noon to 6:00 PM. Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church or DCCC Endowment Association both in care of the funeral home.
