Virdie Allen Nickell, 90, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City. He was born on February 11, 1919 in Beaver County, Oklahoma, the son of Fred and Hester (Potter) Nickell.

Virdie attended school in Oklahoma. He then moved with his family to Dodge City where he has lived all his life. On April 15, 1938, he married Doris Rabourn. She died on February 7, 1996. He then married Shirley Arthur in February of 2001 in Dodge City. She survives.

He was a member of Church Of Christ of Dodge City and the Senior Friends also of Dodge City.

In addition to his wife Shirley, Virdie is survived by one son, Dr. Ted Nickell and wife Nancy of Palm Harbor, Florida; two daughters, Judy Wilson and husband Dr. Ron Wilson of Columbia, Missouri and Cherie Phillips of Great Bend. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, five sisters, one son in-law, and one grandson.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Mr. Kirk Castleman presiding. Burial will follow at Greencrest Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, October 22, 2009 from noon to 8:00 PM.
