Dodge City - Virgil G. Allen, 90, died October 18, 2017 at Trinity Manor in Dodge City. He was born on July 22, 1927 at Gypsum, the son of Sam and Lena (Holcome) Allen.
He was married to Connie Davis, she preceded him in death. He later married Dorothy (Smith) Reynolds on February 12, 1995, she survives. Mr. Allen was a partner in Sam's Shoe store for many years. He served his country as a Merchant Marine during World War II and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from October 11, 1950 to September 20, 1952. Mr. Allen was a huge supporter of the Dodge City High School Football Program.
He was a member of the Christ the King Lutheran Church, National Bowling League, Bowlers Hall of Fame, Mariah Hills Golf Course, Dodge City Community College Board of Trustees, and Howard Gotschall V.F.W. Post #1714.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Allen of the home; one son Jeff Allen and wife Nancy of St. Charles, Missouri; one step-daughter, Glenda Ohlmeier and husband Lee of Dodge City, one brother Jim Allen and wife Wynona of Dodge City; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Allen is also survived by ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Pete Allen; and one sister, Margrette.
Memorial service will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1008 Beeson Road Dodge City, Kansas on Friday November 10, 2017 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Corky Spitler presiding. Inurnment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City with full Military Rites by Howard Gotschall V.F.W. Post #1714 and the KSARNG Military Honors. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Christ the King Lutheran Church or to the Donor's Choice in care of the funeral home.
