Virgil E. Simmons, 81, died Friday, January 1, 2010 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin. He was born on April 29, 1928 in Dodge City, the son of Earl J. and Hattie (Hood)Simmons.

Virgil was raised in the Kalvesta area and attended school there. He worked for Finney County as a maintainer for many years until his retirement.

Mr. Simmons is survived by three sons, Roger Simmons of Rigby, Idaho, David Simmons of Kalvesta, and Edwin Simmons of Cimarron; one daughter, Kathy Roberts of Prattsville, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leroy, and one granddaughter, Nikki Davis.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Kent Little presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Monday, January 4, 2010 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to Virgil Simmons Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
