Obituary

SUBLETTE - Wayne LeRoy Allen was born to Melvin Walker and Julia Irene (Duncan) Allen on May 15, 1925 in rural Seward County on the family farm.  He passed away at the farm on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at the age of 92.

Along with his two brothers and two sisters, the family lived on the farm.  Wayne attended Fairview School, a little one room country school just south of the family farm.  He completed the eighth grade there and then went on to Sublette High School, graduating in 1943.

Wayne served his country during World War II in the Army.  On April 28, 1945, he and Cecil Jean Hughes were married in Dodge City.  For many years, they made their home at the old home place.  Later they bought a house made by the Meade school and moved it to the farm.  Wayne and Cecil enjoyed dancing and eating at the Elks Club in Liberal.  Wayne also enjoyed driving around the countryside at a slow pace with his pipe just seeing what was taking place.

Wayne spent his life working the ground as a farmer and working cattle as a rancher.  Together with his brother, Glen, they labored hard to keep the farm growing and the ranch producing.  He was one of the hardest workers in the community.  He was very close to his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Seward County Farm Bureau, the Liberal Elks Club, Arkalon Grazing Association and the Kansas Livestock Association.

Wayne is survived by his sister, Shirley Phoenix and husband John of Sublette; two sisters-in-law, Vada Jo Allen of Sublette and Rita Allen of Newton; a brother-in-law, Clifford Hughes and wife Bonnie of Seibert, Colorado; four nephews, Roger Bonsall (Cindy) of Hugoton, Keith Allen (Kim Briggeman) of Sublette, Curtis Allen (Chris) of Newton, and Doug Allen (Diana) of Kirkwood, Missouri; eight nieces, Connie Kilgore (Jr.) of Abbeyville, Thresa Reynolds (Jim) of Copeland, Shawna Mathis (Scott) of Waxahachie, Texas, Angie Phoenix of Frost, Texas, Prudy Shultz (Dave) of Dodge City, Karen Warden (Gary) of Liberal, Debbie Sherman of Seibert, Colorado, and Sandy Schall of Brentwood, Tennessee; 31 great nephews and nieces; and 46 great-great nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his wife Cecil Jean; his parents; brothers, Glen and Max Allen; sister, Melva Bonsall; twin infant brothers, William and Willis Allen; and sisters-in-laws, Betty Reid, Georgia Kilgore, and Emma Johns.

Funeral service will be held at Sublette Christian Church on Saturday September 9, 2017 at 10:00 AM with Mr. Chet Wiswell presiding.  Burial will follow at Banner Cemetery in Seward County with military rites by the Sublette American Legion and the KSARNG Military Honors.  Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Friday September 8, 2017 from noon to 8:00 PM.  Memorials are suggested to Banner Cemetery in care of the funeral home.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
