DODGE CITY-Wayne Miles Bushell, 89, died Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. He was born on February 20, 1921 in Green, Kansas, the son of John R. and Ethel E. (Smith) Bushell.
Wayne graduated from Dodge City High School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On June 9, 1942, he married Marjorie Jean Maskus at the home of her parents, George and Alta Maskus in Hodgeman County. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2004. Wayne worked for over 30 years at the Dodge City Post Office until his retirement in 1979. Mr. Bushell was inducted into the Kansas State Bowling Hall of Fame in 1982. Wayne served on the Kansas State Bowling Association Board of Directors and was the secretary for many years for the Dodge City Bowling Association.
He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church of Wichita, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the American Legion, Howard Gotschall Post #1714, V.F.W., and the Senior Friends all of Dodge City. He was past post commander of Howard Gotschall Post #1714 V.F.W.
Wayne is survived by one son, Billy Joe Bushell and wife Julie of Oveido, Florida; two daughters, Janet Thorpe and husband Mike of Wichita and Jerelyn Bushell of Phoenix, Arizona; one sister, Marjorie Strain of Newton; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Barbara Jean; two brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral service will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Randall Jahnke presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City, with military rites conducted by Howard Gotschall Post #1714 V.F.W. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Thursday, April 15, 2010 from noon to 8:00 PM, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
