IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William "Bill"
Joseph Hicks
July 16, 1946 – March 2, 2024
In loving memory, William Joseph (Bill) Hicks, a devoted father, loving husband, and cherished friend, passed away on March 2, 2024, at his home in Dodge City, KS. Born on July 16, 1946 in Stafford, KS to Hobert Dwayne Hicks and Celia Francis Taylor. Bill moved with his Mother and brothers to Kinsley in 1959 and graduated from Kinsley High School in 1964. Bill attended Dodge City Junior College then as an adult continued his education at Dodge City Community College. In 1968 Bill married Sidney Lancaster, later parting ways in 2000. Bill lived a life filled with passion for family, adventure, and the great outdoors.
Throughout his life, Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of fishing, boating, golfing, watching KSU football/KU basketball and cruising the open roads on his motorcycle. His enthusiasm for these activities was contagious, and he shared countless unforgettable moments with his family and friends. Bill was a giving man who worked tirelessly to ensure that his family had everything they needed. Bill was an electric lineman for 13 years with KP&L. Later he worked in sales for Tifco Industries and Farm Bureau. In his younger years, Bill, was a volunteer fireman for the Kinsley Fire Department, a member of IBEW and received an award for saving a coworkers life. Bill faced every challenge in life with admirable strength and courage.
Bill retired early due to several health issues including open heart surgery in 2001. Not long after this is when he purchased his first RV and became a Winter Texan spending his winters in Brownsville, TX and summers with his daughters in KS.
Those who knew Bill will remember him for his kindness, generosity, willingness to lend a helping hand and his constant desire to make others' lives better were among the traits that drew people to him, as he had an undeniable ability to talk to anyone he met. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bill leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his two daughters, Shawn (Sean) Hopkins and Michelle (Brian) Peterson who meant the world to him. Grandsons, Tyler (Kristin) Williams and Chris Peterson whom he affectionatly called his "boneheads". Granddaughters, Shelby (Jose) Diego and Taylor Millhouse. Great Granddaughter Elliana Grace Diego. He was always there guiding, supporting, and willing to jump in and fix whatever was needed. We will forever cherish the memories we made with him and celebrate the joyous times we shared.
Bill is also survived by the mother of his daughters, Sidney Hicks, brothers Charlie (Kristine) Adams, Karl Skinner and Donald L. Hicks. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers David Adams, Hobert O. Hicks, Robert D. Hicks and sister Bonnie Sims.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Hospice of the Prairie or Seven Baskets Full Ministry in Bill's honor.
